Plot summary
Georgia Thursday comes to a run-down residence hotel in New York City looking for her ex-husband, Max Thursday, the alcoholic former police officer who works there as house detective. She tells him their young son Jeff has been kidnapped, and that Jeff was last seen with Fred Mace, her brother, who is missing as well. Georgia has kept the police out of it because Dr. Elder, a business acquaintance of her brother, warned her against reporting the crime. Max sobers up and goes to see Elder, who meets him with a gun drawn. The doctor drugs Max, knocks him out, and leaves him in the street.
