Gordon Heath

Biography

Gordon Heath was an American actor and musician, and he narrated the animated film Animal Farm (1954) and took the title role in The Emperor Jones (1953) and Othello (1955), both live BBC telecasts. Born in New York City in 1918, he showed early talent for music and art but chose acting, working on stage and radio before joining the New York station WMCA in 1945 as the first black staff announcer at a major US radio outlet. That same year he won success on Broadway in Deep Are the Roots, directed by Elia Kazan, which ran for 447 performances, and he repeated his role when the play moved to London's West End. He settled in Paris in 1948, acted there, and played Othello on the London stage in 1950. From the 1960s he ran the English-speaking Studio Theater of Paris for ten years, and he recorded folk albums in the 1950s. He died in 1991.
