Plot summary
During the summer of 2004, Dave Chappelle plans a free concert in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill neighborhood, where Quincy Street meets Downing Street. He travels through the small Ohio town he calls home, inviting a few dozen residents and covering their travel and lodging for the trip east. Kanye West, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, Common, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, Dead Prez, Big Daddy Kane and the Roots are booked to play, and the Fugees come together on stage for the first time in more than seven years. The Central State University marching band is brought in to open the day, and Chappelle performs comedy sketches and monologues between the musical sets. The project takes inspiration in part from the 1973 concert documentary Wattstax.

- Nearly every song on the soundtrack album was recorded live in concert, except "Born & Raised", an exclusive new studio track by Mos Def and Talib Kweli's Black Star. Many performances, including The Fugees' reunion and Kanye West's, could not be included because of legal restraints with the groups' record labels.
- The film is widely recognized for facilitating one of the last major Fugees reunions, often called one of hip-hop's most significant reunions. Rapper J. Cole has described attending the block party as a defining experience.
