Da Brat

Biography

Da Brat, born Shawntae Harris in Chicago, is an American rapper who broke through after winning a Yo! MTV Raps rap contest in 1992. That led to a deal with Jermaine Dupri's So So Def Recordings, and her debut album Funkdafied (1994) made her the first solo female rapper to sell over a million records. Its title track topped the Hot Rap Songs chart and reached number six on the Hot 100. She followed with Anuthatantrum (1996), which featured Ghetto Love with T-Boz, and Unrestricted (2000), which reached number five on the Billboard 200. Known for guest verses, she appeared on remixes for Mariah Carey, Lil' Kim's Not Tonight, and tracks by Missy Elliott and Destiny's Child. Her film work includes Kazaam (1996) and Glitter (2001). She has two Grammy nominations. She has been a mentor on The Rap Game and a co-host on the Rickey Smiley Morning Show, and she joined Growing up Hip Hop: Atlanta.
