Plot summary

The Maestro lives in a mansion in Normal Valley and entertains the town's children there with his powers. The children tell their parents about their visits, and the adults come to distrust him. The mayor calls him a freak and leads a group of townspeople to the mansion to drive him out. The children say the Maestro has done nothing wrong, but the mayor will not listen. When the mayor orders him to leave, the Maestro sets the terms of a contest instead.

  • Ghosts was first planned as a tie-in to the 1993 comedy Addams Family Values, with Christina Ricci and Jimmy Workman reprising their Addams roles as Wednesday and Pugsley and Ken Jenkins as the Mayor. Michael Jackson pulled out of the deal, returning an estimated $5 million, and the Addams Family connection was dropped.
  • According to Mick Garris, who began directing the project, Ghosts was the most expensive music video ever made, costing around $15 million, all of it paid for by Michael Jackson himself.
  • At over 38 minutes long, Ghosts held the Guinness world record for the longest music video until 2013, when Pharrell Williams' "Happy" eclipsed it.
  • "On the Line", written and produced by Babyface and performed by Michael Jackson, was recorded for Spike Lee's 1996 film Get on the Bus but was not featured on the soundtrack.
