Plot summary
Twelve years of prison end for Walter, who returns to Philadelphia. His sister and old friends will not see him, and his brother-in-law Carlos is the only one who helps. Walter rents a small apartment across from a school and finds work at a lumber mill, where he fears his record will be discovered. At the mill he meets Vicki, one of the few women on the floor, who tells him she will not hold his history against him. A police officer named Lucas comes by often to remind Walter that he is being watched. In a nearby park Walter meets Robin, a young girl who watches birds.
