Plot summary
Jack Mosley is a burned-out NYPD detective. After a long night shift, his lieutenant orders him to escort Eddie Bunker, a witness in custody, sixteen blocks to a courthouse to testify before a grand jury at ten in the morning. Eddie tries to make conversation about moving to Seattle and opening a bakery with a sister he has never met. Mosley stops at a liquor store. Then gunmen open fire on the escort car.

- The film was shot with the ending written for the screenplay, but, as described by Donner and writer Richard Wenk, they realized during filming that there was "a better opportunity to have a little more empathy and wrap the picture up in a different way."
