Plot summary
On a New York street corner as children, Sidney and Dre discovered hip-hop, and that day led both of them toward careers in music. Sidney has just left a music review job at the L.A. Times to become editor-in-chief of XXL. Dre is an A&R executive at Millennium Records, frustrated that his label favors marketable artists over true talent. Back in each other's lives, they are close friends. Dre is engaged to marry Reese, an entertainment attorney, and Sidney says she is not interested in Dre romantically. Dre's label pushes him to manage a gimmicky duo, Ren and Ten.
