Plot summary
British scientists, after making high-speed aircraft experiments work, plan the first crewed flight into space and build a rocket that can double as a satellite. Commander Michael Haydon heads the crew, whose flight carries an experimental nuclear bomb. Barbara, Larry Noble's wife, and Ellen, the girlfriend of the radio operator Jimmy Wheeler, are frightened of the danger. Reporter Kim Hamilton, who has argued for the worth of space exploration, stows away aboard the rocket the night before the launch to experience the flight and its crew for herself.
