Plot summary
Andrew Undershaft's fortune comes from the weapons he manufactures, and that is what divides him from his daughter Barbara, who holds the rank of major in the Salvation Army. She took up that cause in rebellion against him, and the two are estranged. Andrew needs an heir for his industrial empire, and the successor he has in mind must be a foundling, as he himself once was. Adolphus Cusins, a professor who became a preacher, is in love with Barbara.

- Major Barbara was shot in London during the Blitz bombing of 1940, and during air raids the cast and crew repeatedly ducked into bomb shelters; producer-director Gabriel Pascal never halted production and the film was finished on schedule.
- One account says the shoot was meant to take ten weeks but ran to twenty; the original £130,000 budget was not enough to finish it, so J. Arthur Rank supplied £100,000, after which Rank committed fully to investing in films.
