Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Under the Cherry Moon (1986)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- After disagreements about the film's direction, Mary Lambert left the production on 4 November and Prince took over directing himself. He was able to do so because it was being filmed in Europe and thus did not fall afoul of the Directors Guild of America, which often vetoes directors being fired in favour of lead performers.
- Under the Cherry Moon was shot on color stock and then processed into black and white in post-production. None of the color footage has yet emerged, with the exception of the music video for “Mountains”.
- Prince originally planned for Susannah Melvoin, sister of Revolution member Wendy Melvoin and his girlfriend at the time, to play Mary Sharon, but it was clear she could not act and he replaced her with Kristin Scott Thomas, in her feature debut.
- The film won five Golden Raspberry Awards and tied with Howard the Duck for Worst Picture, yet its associated soundtrack album Parade sold over a million copies and achieved platinum status.
