Charles Bates

Biography

Charles Bates was an American child actor who worked in more than 40 films from 1935 to 1952, largely in small parts. Born in Los Angeles, he was best known as the young Roger Newton in Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt (1943). Among his other notable credits were The North Star (1943) and San Diego, I Love You (1944), along with Pursued (1947) and Shockproof (1949). His final film was The Snows of Kilimanjaro (1952), where he played the younger version of Gregory Peck's character. After his acting years, Bates studied electrical engineering and worked for the State of California as an electrical engineer, retiring in 1996. He died in May 2023.
