Tamlyn Tomita
Biography
Tamlyn Tomita is a Japanese-American actress who first reached the screen as Kumiko in The Karate Kid, Part II (1986), a part she later played again in Cobra Kai (2021). Born in Okinawa and raised in Los Angeles, she studied at UCLA and was crowned Nisei Week queen in 1984, then was asked to audition for that debut. She is well known for playing Waverly in The Joy Luck Club (1993), and her film credits include Come See the Paradise (1990), Four Rooms (1995), and The Day After Tomorrow (2004). On television she had recurring roles on 24, Eureka, Teen Wolf, and Glee, among other shows; she was a regular on Berlin Station in 2016, recurred on The Good Doctor from 2017 to 2019, and played Commodore Oh on Star Trek: Picard in 2020. She also made a solo album, Sweet Surprise, for release only in Japan.

First role
Tomita was crowned queen of Nisei Week in 1984 while a junior at UCLA, and the 1963 pageant queen, Helen Funai, asked her and other Japanese-American girls to audition for Kumiko in The Karate Kid Part II.
A role that slipped away
In 1993, Tomita appeared as Lt. Commander Takashima in the pilot movie for Babylon 5, the second-in-command of the space station, but she turned down the chance to stay on as a cast member of the later series.
