Plot summary
After his senior prom, Daniel tells Miyagi that Ali has left him for a football player. A letter from Okinawa says Miyagi's father is dying, so Miyagi returns home, and Daniel goes with him. Miyagi tells him about Yukie, who was promised to his closest friend Sato; Sato demanded a duel to the death, and Miyagi left the country. Sato, now a rich industrialist, repeats that demand, and Miyagi refuses. At the village, Yukie and her niece Kumiko welcome them. His supertrawlers have wiped out the village's fishing, and the villagers rent their land from him. Miyagi's father dies, and Sato grants three days of mourning. Miyagi begins teaching Daniel the drum technique with a den-den daiko, and Daniel grows close to Kumiko. Daniel also makes an enemy of Sato's nephew Chozen, who meets them on their arrival.

- Okinawa itself was unusable because military bases had transformed the countryside, so the Okinawan village was built on Oahu on land owned by a retired local doctor: seven faithful replicas of Okinawan houses and more than three acres of planted crops.
- The scene that opens the sequel was originally written as the ending of the first Karate Kid, but it was left unshot until production on Part II had already begun, which is why the two films join so seamlessly.
- Bill Conti's music for Part II is the only score in the trilogy without the pan flute of Gheorghe Zamfir, and by the anniversary album's liner notes the composer came to regret leaving it out.
- The Karate Kid Part II soundtrack holds a piece of record-industry history: it was the very last album United Artists Records ever released.
