Plot summary
Kenji Sato is a professional baseball player in the United States, on the verge of a championship, when he suddenly returns to Japan. Reporter Ami Wakita puts the trip down to unfinished family business. In fact Ken's father, Hayao Sato, is a silver giant extraterrestrial known as the Ultra, and Ken inherited the powers that make him Ultraman, battling kaiju to keep them contained. Complaints from citizens after a fight with the kaiju Neronga leave him feeling underappreciated, and he thinks of his mother Emiko, whose whereabouts are unknown. Dr. Onda, who leads the Kaiju Defense Force, monitors a transport carrying a secret package. When the bird-like kaiju Gigantron brings the team down near the stadium, she collapses on the package, which holds her egg.

- Shannon Tindle's film was originally developed at Sony Pictures Animation from 2016 to 2018, when its plot would have followed a billionaire forced to grow up when he takes on the orphaned children of his former foe. After leaving Sony, Tindle repurposed that plot to fit the Ultraman franchise at Netflix Animation.
- Ultraman: Rising began as an original idea by director Shannon Tindle, who conceived it while working as a character designer on Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends in the mid-to-late 2000s.
