Plot summary
A biological weapon called the Y-bomb is used in a war in Afghanistan. It targets the male Y-chromosome and kills 97 percent of the world's men. Believing they are better off without men, the surviving women outlaw them as too violent, and cloning becomes the principal means of reproduction. Years later, Hope Chayse, a graduate student in genetic engineering, worries about the future of the species. She runs a cloning experiment and produces Adam, a male engineered to mature from infancy to adulthood in weeks and to refrain from violence. Adam leaves Hope to explore the city on his own, and FBI agent Kara Hastings is determined to capture him.
