Ellen Drew
Biography
Ellen Drew was an American film actress who came to movies by an unlikely route, holding a series of jobs and winning beauty contests before a customer at the ice cream parlor where she worked, the actor William Demarest, took notice and helped her get into films. Born in Kansas City, Missouri, she appeared in 25 features under her own name, then worked at Paramount Pictures from 1938 to 1944, making as many as six films a year, among them Sing You Sinners and The Lady's from Kentucky. In 1944 she moved on to RKO. Her later pictures included Christmas in July (1940), The Crooked Way (1949), Isle of the Dead (1945), The Baron of Arizona (1950) and Johnny O'Clock (1947). As film work slowed in the 1950s she turned to television, and in 1960 the Hollywood Walk of Fame honored her with a star.
