Plot summary
Tom Milford is a publishing executive in New York City with a reputation as a womanizer. He and Joan Howell bump into each other by accident three times, and on the third occasion he asks her out. Joan longs to act, and in the meantime she makes her living cleaning other people's homes. She shares a small apartment with her roommate Audrey, who is chasing the same ambition. Joan is too ashamed of it to bring Tom there, so she takes him to a grand apartment she looks after for a client, believing the client will be away for about two weeks, and passes it off as her own.
