Robert Culp
Biography
Robert Culp was an American actor and screenwriter whose career in television spanned more than 50 years. He came to national attention as Texas Ranger Hoby Gilman on the CBS Western series Trackdown from 1957 to 1959. He earned an international reputation as secret agent Kelly Robinson on I Spy from 1965 to 1968, opposite Bill Cosby. For that series he wrote seven scripts, directed one, and was nominated for Emmys for both acting and writing. From 1981 to 1983 he played FBI Agent Bill Maxwell on The Greatest American Hero. His films included PT 109 (1963), Sunday in New York (1963), Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice (1969), Hannie Caulder (1971), and The Pelican Brief (1993). He also directed Hickey & Boggs (1972), reuniting with Cosby. On television he later played Warren Whelan on Everybody Loves Raymond from 1996 to 2004 and voiced Dr. Wallace Breen in Half-Life 2.

A role that slipped away
In 1973, Culp came close to taking the male lead in the sci-fi series Space: 1999. While negotiating with Gerry Anderson, the show's creator and executive producer, Culp presented himself as an actor, director and producer, but Martin Landau got the part.

Culp wrote the scripts for seven I Spy episodes, directed one of them, and earned an Emmy nomination for writing, while losing the acting Emmy all three years to co-star Bill Cosby.

Culp directed Hickey & Boggs, which brought him and Cosby back together for the first time since I Spy. In the film, the pair play private eyes who are over the hill.
Beyond film
Culp appeared as an erudite, detached narrator in the music video for Eminem's "Guilty Conscience", though the album version used Mark Avery as narrator.
