Plot summary
In 1934, the banker Morgan Crawford forecloses on the McClatchie farm, and Wilma McClatchie's husband is shot by the police sent to evict the family. Wilma takes her two daughters, Polly and Billie Jean, into a life of bank robbery aimed at the property of the banker who took their home. Crawford is now campaigning for governor, and Wilma tells her daughters that the way to bring a man down is to destroy his dreams. Daryl Pearson, a newspaperman who has fallen for Wilma, witnesses one of the holdups and writes up the family, helping to turn the McClatchies into folk legends.
