Biography

An American actor born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, in 1916, Phil Brown began on the New York stage with the Group Theatre and helped found the Actors' Laboratory Theatre in Hollywood, where he made his film debut in I Wanted Wings (1941). He played Nick Adams in The Killers (1946) and Tom in a London production of The Glass Menagerie in 1948. From 1953 to 1993 he worked in the United Kingdom in stage, television and film, and he also directed for the stage and television. In 1953 he acted in The River Line on the West End stage. His most famous part was Owen Lars, Luke Skywalker's uncle, in Star Wars (1977). In the 1990s he went back to the United States. He died in 2006.
