Plot summary
Elizabeth is married to Lewis Fielding, a successful English writer, and she has grown tired of her life with him. She leaves her husband and their child and travels to Baden-Baden, the German spa town. In an elevator she meets a young man, Thomas, who says he is a poet. The two are briefly drawn to each other, and Elizabeth goes home to England. Lewis, who suspects his wife, asks Thomas to remain in the house and work for him as a secretary.
