Plot summary
Earth's first starship, the Phaeton, is on a ten-year journey to the Epsilon Eridani star system with a crew of twelve. On an Earth where dry land is disappearing, the mission's purpose has changed: to find a planet humans can inhabit. Worn like glasses, virtual reality modules let the crew take on other identities and live out adventures, and their days are broadcast home as the reality program Edge of Never: Life on the Phaeton, produced by the ship's psychologist, Dr. Roger Fallon. Six months in, the ship nears its point of no return, the last chance to turn back. Commander Frank Pike has begun a secret relationship with botanist Rika Goddard, Fallon's wife, and the virtual world the crew relies on keeps glitching around a man no one knows.
