Plot summary

Twenty years after disappearing in 1908, Butch Cassidy lives in a secluded Bolivian village under the name James Blackthorn, raising horses. News of the death of Etta Place ends his long exile: he writes to their son, Ryan, and plans a return to the United States. He tells his lover, Yana, that he will see her again, then rides to Potosí to sell his horses and withdraw his savings. On the road back he is ambushed; he shoots his attacker, and his horse, Cinco, bolts with his money. The wounded man is Eduardo Apodaca, a Spanish mining engineer, who says he was firing at pursuers and offers Blackthorn a share of fifty thousand dollars he took from mine owner Simón Patiño, hidden in an abandoned mine. Patiño's men follow within a day.
