Plot summary
Modesty Blaise works as a croupier in a Tangier casino and also serves as the owner's bodyguard. Armed criminals kill her employer and hold the staff hostage while demanding entry to the safe. Since they kill the only person who can open it, Modesty sends for a fellow employee who knows the computer password. While everyone waits, she challenges the criminals' leader to roulette. If she wins twice, a captive who promises silence goes free; if she loses, she must reveal her past. She agrees and recounts her life: an orphaned child in a Balkan refugee camp, a mentor who taught her languages and martial arts, his death in Algeria, and her move to Tangier to become a croupier.
