Plot summary
Rayburn Swanson owns the Gwen Swanson Sanctuary in northern Minnesota, land he named for his daughter, who vanished from his car five years ago while he stepped into a store for whiskey. He keeps hunters away with surveillance cameras. Sheriff Alice Gustafson examines the body of a teenage girl found beside a lake and finds a scar on the throat and a spearhead lodged in a tree. Rayburn arrives to identify the girl; it is not Gwen. Alice learns the spear came from a rare weapon, an atlatl.
