Plot summary
In the Tyrol of the early 16th century, Martin and Georg are orphans who grow up as close as brothers. Georg follows a calling into the church, while Martin takes up soldiering and rises to command troops. The turmoil of the Lutheran Reformation turns their region into a religious conflict, and the two friends come to stand on opposing sides, each trying to do what is right. Martin is given the office of executioner, so the loyalty he feels for Georg is set against the fundamentalist doctrine he is now bound to serve. The Inquisition is also active in the region.
