Plot summary
Jeffrey Desange loses his fortune in the 2008 financial crisis. He kills his colleagues and his estranged wife, then takes his young daughters, Victoria and Lily, away from their home. He drives recklessly on a snowy road and crashes, and brings the girls to an abandoned cabin. Lucas, his twin brother, pays for a search party that finds the cabin five years later, where Victoria and Lily are alive but feral after years of isolation. A welfare clinic takes them in, and in therapy they speak of Mama, the maternal protector they say stayed with them.

- Much of the title character was shot practically: to get Mama's unnaturally jerky movements, Javier Botet was hung from a wire rig while his limbs were tugged at random times, and even heavily CGI-augmented scenes stitched together elements of his performance.
- Mama was moved from an October 2012 release to January 2013 to avoid competing with Paranormal Activity 4, and its success there, along with other horror films released in dump months, convinced studios to start opening horror movies year-round.
