Plot summary
In the Congo, Flint, a paraplegic, keeps the local natives under his control by giving them small amounts of sugar and liquor, sometimes kerosene in place of the liquor, and by staging magic tricks that seem to give him supernatural powers. Tula, his fiancée, helps with the tricks, along with two thugs named Hogan and Cookie and a native man named Fuzzy. An eighty-mile circle of jungle around his compound is patrolled by his men, and no one comes or goes without his consent. Flint has spent eighteen years planning revenge on Gregg, who crushed his spine in a brawl and left with his wife. He had Gregg's infant daughter Ann raised by nuns in a Cape Town convent, and he sends Hogan to bring her to the camp disguised as a missionary.

- Kongo reused exterior footage shot four years earlier for West of Zanzibar, including the scene where the "Juju" spirit scares African ivory bearers so Flint's men can steal their dropped tusks, and the natives' funeral pyre ritual.
- Production on Kongo began several weeks ahead of MGM's Red Dust, the romantic drama starring Clark Gable, Jean Harlow, and Mary Astor; some Kongo sets designed by Cedric Gibbons were also used for Red Dust.
- Walter Huston's make-up was painful, with scars covering almost his entire face and his features pulled out of shape so that he was almost unrecognizable.
