Plot summary
Skeet Burns signs up with the Marine Corps mostly to get a free ride to San Diego, then slips away from Sergeant O'Hara and travels to Tia Juana in Mexico for the races. He comes back and enlists for real, and O'Hara takes charge of him at the base. There Skeet notices Norma Dale, a Navy nurse, and his brash way of introducing himself gets him nowhere. He finds out that O'Hara is taken with her too. Norma asks the sergeant to bring Skeet on a training voyage at sea, even though the recruit's work and attitude are poor, and learns he has already done so. Aboard ship Skeet starts a fight with a sailor and does not know that his opponent holds the Navy heavyweight title.

- Lon Chaney became the first film star chosen to be an honorary Marine for his role as Sergeant O'Hara in Tell It to the Marines.
- The studio was allowed to shoot at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego, which made Tell It to the Marines the first motion picture made with the full cooperation of the U.S. Marine Corps.
- MGM brought in General Smedley D. Butler, commander of the San Diego Marine base and later author of War Is a Racket, to consult on the film, and Lon Chaney formed a close friendship with him that lasted the rest of Chaney's life.
- Tell It to the Marines was shot at the same time as Pathé's serial The Fighting Marine with Gene Tunney and Fox's What Price Glory?, leading MGM and Fox to bicker over which studio had the rights to use the name of the U.S. Marine Corps.
