Plot summary
Poppa Zazarack's gypsy sideshow travels the carnival circuit in Hungary, where his daughter Zara works the magic act and Anton throws knives. A well-dressed stranger keeps watching the performances from the crowd, and on the night the carnival moves on he steps into the troupe's wagon with an offer of money for a scheme in America. In New York, Michael Nash promotes Zara as a famous Hungarian mystic, and wealthy socialites crowd her séances. When the chief of police sits in on a show and fails to expose it, the act goes on. Nash then picks out a new target: Doris Merrick, a young heiress whose money is managed by the businessman James Bradshaw.
