Plot summary
John Smallwood is a caring but naive chaplain in a prison when a clerical error hands him the parish of Orbiston Parva, a small, prosperous English town that the Despard family and its factory largely run. The Bishop had wanted a different cleric of the same name, the one the Despards favor. The new vicar believes charity and forgiveness should be put to practical use, and he finds the townspeople's view of their own Christian conduct hard to match with their behavior. He names Matthew, a dustman, his churchwarden, takes in the Smith family after their eviction from an illegal encampment, and persuades Lady Despard to pay for food the church gives away free. The town's respectable residents are horrified by the vicar's choice of churchwarden and by his welcome for the family.
