Biography
Known professionally as Meat Loaf, Michael Lee Aday was an American singer who also built a long career as an actor. Born in Dallas, Texas, he first drew notice on stage in productions of Hair and The Rocky Horror Show, then reached a wide public with the Bat Out of Hell albums, a trilogy that sold more than 100 million copies. The song I'd Do Anything for Love brought him a Grammy, and in 1994 he received a Brit Award for best-selling album and single. On screen he took more than 50 film and television parts, among them Eddie in The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), a small role as a doorman in Wayne's World (1992), a band director in Leap of Faith (1992), Red in Black Dog (1998), and Robert Paulsen in Fight Club (1999).

Big break
Meat Loaf met songwriter Jim Steinman while auditioning for the Public Theater's production of More Than You Deserve, singing a Stoney and Meat Loaf song and winning the part of Rabbit.
A role that slipped away
Meat Loaf joined the original L.A. Roxy cast of The Rocky Horror Show in late 1973, taking the parts of Eddie and Dr. Scott. When the musical became a film, he played only Eddie, and Jonathan Adams was cast as Dr. Scott.
First role
Meat Loaf formed Meat Loaf Soul, his first band, in Los Angeles. At the Cave in Huntington Beach, California, in 1968, the group gave its first gig, opening for Question Mark and the Mysterians and Van Morrison's band Them.
A change of course
Meat Loaf sang lead vocals on five of the nine tracks of Ted Nugent's 1976 album Free-for-All when Nugent's regular singer Derek St. Holmes temporarily quit.
A role that slipped away
Meat Loaf said Steinman wrote "Total Eclipse of the Heart" and "Making Love Out of Nothing at All" for him, but his label refused to let him record Steinman's songs, claiming nobody wanted to hear them. In 1983, Bonnie Tyler's and Air Supply's versions held No. 1 and No. 2 together.
