Plot summary
Travis W. Redfish distributes Shiner beer across Texas and lends a hand at the salvage company his father, Corpus C. Redfish, runs. His best friend and business partner, B.B. Muldoon, makes the deliveries with him, and Travis's younger sister Alice Poo is sweet on B.B. Out on the road, the two men pass an RV stranded at the roadside. They laugh off the idea of stopping until Travis spots Lola Bouilliabase watching him from the rear window. Lola adores Alice Cooper, a performer Travis has never heard of. With the RV repaired, she talks him into driving the group to Austin for a Hank Williams Jr. show. There his speed at setting up equipment impresses the music mogul Mohammed Johnson, who insists he work more dates.

- Meat Loaf was suggested for the lead role of Travis by Shep Gordon, and director Alan Rudolph recalled that he did not know Meat Loaf's music at all and still does not, choosing him because he was the character of Travis to him, though less Zen.
- The film grew out of Texan author James "Big Boy" Medlin's LA Weekly pieces about a mechanic named Travis Redfish, his fictional alter ego; Medlin and Michael Ventura were first hired by producer Zalman King to write a script about the last day of John Wesley Hardin, which was never made, before Medlin's idea for a Travis Redfish film became Roadie.
