Plot summary
Farm boy Daryl Cage's parents ship him off to the big city to live with his brother, hoping he will have a better life there. After a baggage mixup at the airport, Daryl finds himself in possession of a drug cache, which a ruthless drug dealer wants back. The dealer murders Daryl's brother and the small town boy ends up all alone in the big city, being pursued by both the drug dealer and the police, who suspect him of the murder.

- Director Richard Tuggle and his star Anthony Michael Hall clashed during filming: Tuggle was stunned to discover that Hall, cast as an innocent farm boy, meant to play him like a Clint Eastwood tough guy.
- Anthony Michael Hall, who made Out of Bounds right after Weird Science, had also come close to starring in Full Metal Jacket; at the time he was developing a script from The Basketball Diaries and a biopic of a bantamweight boxer.
- Siouxsie and the Banshees were flown over especially for their cameo in the film, playing their song "Cities in Dust" in a club scene and reading the script first before agreeing.
- Bon Jovi wrote a song called "Out of Bounds" to be the title song for the movie, but it ended up not being used.
- Richard Tuggle and Tony Kayden reworked the script together, changing the hero from a Westchester, N.Y., kid interested in heavy metal into an Iowa farm boy, so that the hero would stand out more sharply from the world he falls into.
- When Governor George Deukmejian visited the set, Anthony Michael Hall refused to make an appearance as long as any news teams were on hand.
- Night Ranger's song "Wild & Innocent Youth" featured on the film's soundtrack but has never appeared on any of the band's albums.
