Plot summary
The story spans three years in the life of a middle-class family in Austria, told in three parts. Georg is an engineer, Anna is an optometrist, and they are raising their daughter. The first part follows one day of their life in 1987 and the second another day in 1988, both largely wordless, with many of the same activities appearing again. Near the start of each part, Anna reads aloud a letter to Georg's parents about his success at work. Behind the calm and repetition of these days, the couple are planning something. Australia, the continent they speak of as their destination, appears as an image of an isolated beach and desert.
