Lars Ulrich
Biography
Lars Ulrich is a Danish musician who drums for Metallica, the band he founded with James Hetfield after the two met in 1981; the pair share songwriting credits on nearly every song the group has recorded. Born in Gentofte, Denmark, the son of a tennis player, he moved to California at 16 to train professionally before turning to drums. He was a pioneer of fast thrash beats on Metallica's early records, then simplified his playing in the 1990s. From 1998 to 2002 he ran the Music Company, a label that folded. His acting debut came in Hemingway & Gellhorn (2012), and he appeared as himself in Get Him to the Greek (2010) and the documentary Anvil: The Story of Anvil (2008). Metallica entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, and Ulrich became the first Dane given that honor. In 2017 Denmark made him a knight of the Order of the Dannebrog.

About the name
Ulrich took Metallica's name from Ron Quintana, a friend who was considering titles for a heavy metal fanzine. Metallica and Metal Mania were options, so Ulrich pushed him toward Metal Mania and used Metallica himself.
A change of course
Ulrich was one of Denmark's top ten tennis players in his age group, yet he did not make the seven man tennis team at Corona del Mar High School, which helped lead him to focus on music.
Behind the camera
Between 1998 and 2002, Ulrich tried running the Music Company, a record label he started with Metallica accountant Tim Duffy. It did not catch on and folded in 2002.
First role
Ulrich's first acting role came in Hemingway & Gellhorn, an HBO original film. Shooting started in March 2011, and the movie came out on 28 May 2012.
