Tom Araya

Biography

Tom Araya is a Chilean-American musician who has been the vocalist and bassist for the thrash metal band Slayer since 1981. Born in Viña del Mar, Chile, he moved to the United States at five and grew up in Los Angeles, where his older brother's guitar playing inspired him to take up bass at eight. Kerry King recruited him for Slayer in 1981, and Araya used his income as a respiratory therapist to fund the band's debut album, Show No Mercy (1983). He is one of only two original members to stay with Slayer throughout its career, winning two Grammy Awards with the group, which sold 20 million albums. His lyrics often explored serial killers and real events, including the Grammy-winning Eyes of the Insane from Christ Illusion (2006). Hit Parader ranked him 58th on its list of the 100 greatest metal vocalists, and Loudwire placed him 42nd among the 66 greatest hard rock and metal frontmen.
