Robert Trujillo

Biography

Robert Trujillo is an American musician and bassist, best known as Metallica's longest-serving bass player. Born in Santa Monica, California, and raised in Culver City, he first gained prominence playing bass for Suicidal Tendencies, the California crossover thrash band, between 1989 and 1995, and he also performed with its funk metal side project Infectious Grooves. He later played in Ozzy Osbourne's band, co-writing songs for the Down to Earth album, and worked with Jerry Cantrell and Black Label Society. In 2003 he joined Metallica, replacing Jason Newsted, and his audition and hiring appeared in the documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004). He entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009 as a member of Metallica. He produced the 2012 documentary Jaco, about bassist Jaco Pastorius.

Did you know?!

Early training
Trujillo went to jazz school at 19 intending to become a studio musician, though he kept his passion for rock and metal.
Getting ready for a role
For writing down his bass arrangements, Trujillo created a code of his own. He came up with it while recording Jerry Cantrell's Degradation Trip, where the demos had bass that was nearly inaudible.
Own stunts
Trujillo keeps Jaco Pastorius' famous "Bass Of Doom," a sunburst fretless 1962 Jazz Bass that Pastorius played on most of his recordings and live shows. Trujillo has also used it onstage with Metallica.
