Kirk Hammett

Biography

Kirk Hammett is an American musician who has been the lead guitarist of the heavy metal band Metallica since 1983. Born in San Francisco and raised in El Sobrante, he took up the guitar at fifteen after discovering his brother's records. In 1979 he helped form the thrash group Exodus, and during that period he studied with Joe Satriani. Metallica brought him in while making its first album, Kill 'Em All, and he has contributed riffs to its records since Ride the Lightning, including the one at the heart of Enter Sandman. His other work includes the documentary Metallica: Some Kind of Monster (2004), voice roles on Metalocalypse and The Simpsons, the solo EP Portals in 2022, and the horror memorabilia book Too Much Horror Business. He was among the Metallica members honored by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, and in 2023 Rolling Stone placed him joint 23rd among its greatest guitarists.
