Martha Gellhorn, a journalist, and Ernest Hemingway, a celebrated novelist, meet by chance in a Key West bar in 1936. A year later they encounter each other again in Spain, both of them covering the Spanish Civil War and both staying in the same hotel. Hemingway pursues her; Gellhorn resists his advances. During a bombing raid the two are trapped alone in one room, and they become lovers. They stay in Spain until 1939, and there Hemingway works with Joris Ivens on The Spanish Earth.
