Plot summary
Impoverished tenants in an old block of flats are being evicted by their landlord, Andrés Cabrera, who wants the site cleared so he can build a house for himself. The tenants refuse to go. Cabrera's young wife, Paloma, urges him to act, and he turns to Pedro, a powerful and rough worker at the slaughterhouse known as El Bruto, hiring him to force the tenants' leaders out. Pedro moves into Cabrera's house and works in the butcher shop as well as acting for the landlord. Paloma, who works in the shop too, feels a strong pull toward him, and the two start an affair.
