Earl Holliman

Biography

Earl Holliman was an American actor and singer whose many character roles were mostly in Westerns and dramas of the 1950s and 1960s. He grew up partly in Louisiana and Texas, trained at the Pasadena Playhouse and UCLA, and moved from small early screen parts into steady film work. His performance as a rancher's timid son in The Rainmaker (1956) brought him a Golden Globe as best supporting actor. Other films included the war drama The Bridges at Toko-Ri (1954). He also appeared in the crime drama The Big Combo (1955). From 1974 to 1978 he was seen in the police drama Police Woman as Sergeant Bill Crowley, working alongside Angie Dickinson. He recorded as a singer from 1958 to 1963, and on television he later took a recurring role on Caroline in the City. Onstage he took the lead role in Oklahoma! and later played Mitch in a revival of A Streetcar Named Desire.
