Plot summary
Harry Archer represents Kenneth Marquis' wife in the couple's divorce, and his teenage daughter Corliss is smitten with Marquis himself, a thrice-divorced charmer. When Marquis sends Corliss a box of candy, Archer reads the gift as a swipe at the terms he is demanding. Archer also bans Dexter Franklin, Corliss' boyfriend, from seeing her after spotting him at the Penguin Club, which doubles as a gambling joint. Corliss talks Dexter into taking her there anyway. Police raid the place; the pair hide in the basement, get trapped, and reach home at five in the morning. Facing punishment, Corliss claims to have amnesia. To jog her memory, Archer reads her diary aloud, and it is full of imaginary romance with Marquis.
