Joe Dallesandro
Biography
Joe Dallesandro is an American actor and model who became known as a Warhol superstar in underground films. He joined Andy Warhol's Factory and appeared in Lonesome Cowboys (1968). His breakout role in Paul Morrissey's Flesh (1968) brought him fame, and he followed it with Trash (1970) and Heat (1972), then Andy Warhol's Frankenstein (1973) and Andy Warhol's Dracula (1974). After working in European films, including Serge Gainsbourg's Je t'aime moi non-plus (1976), he crossed into mainstream cinema as mobster Lucky Luciano in The Cotton Club (1984). Later credits include Critical Condition (1987), Sunset (1988), Cry-Baby (1990), Guncrazy (1992), and Steven Soderbergh's The Limey (1999). He also appeared on television in Fortune Dane, Wiseguy, Miami Vice, and Matlock. In 2009 he received a special Teddy Award, and he was a writer and producer on the documentary Little Joe.

Big break
Dallesandro was cast in an Andy Warhol project on the spot after he accompanied a friend to watch filming in Greenwich Village in 1967.
A role that slipped away
Dallesandro got a part in the MGM movie The Magic Garden of Stanley Sweetheart in 1969, cast as Stanley's friend, but the production dismissed him on the first day of filming.

A documentary called Little Joe came out in 2009, and Dallesandro was its writer and producer. A biography, Little Joe: Superstar by Michael Ferguson, had been published in 1998.
Behind the award
Dallesandro received a special Teddy Award at the 59th Berlin International Film Festival in 2009 for contributing to LGBT acceptance.
