Plot summary
Wilson, an English career criminal, leaves prison after nine years and travels to Los Angeles to learn how his daughter Jenny died. The death was reported as a car accident, and Wilson does not accept that. He questions Jenny's friends Eduardo and Elaine; Eduardo, another ex-con, helps him find his way in a city he does not understand. Their inquiries point to Terry Valentine, a wealthy record producer Jenny had been dating. Avery, Valentine's security consultant, once handled drug trafficking for him. Wilson finds a warehouse used by the trafficker and asks about Valentine; the men there insult Jenny and beat him. Wilson goes back to the warehouse.

- Steven Soderbergh spliced scenes from Ken Loach's 1967 directorial debut Poor Cow, an earlier Terence Stamp film, into The Limey as flashbacks, using them to build a back story for Stamp's character as a young man, his criminal past and his family life.
- The Limey shifts background sound from one scene into another: Wilson turns on a shower in a hotel room, and the film then shows Wilson in an airplane while the shower is still heard, a device used to link the scenes or suggest their similarity or dissimilarity.
