Plot summary
In a future split by a war between men and women, Lily drives away from a firing squad and into the woods. She passes a hanged shepherd, then women in military gear tormenting a young man, and she leaves her car to continue on foot. She sleeps in a meadow and hears the flowers under her crying out. A brown unicorn goes by, followed by a rider and naked children herding a pig. Lily tracks the rider to a château on a hill, where the rooms are furnished and animals wander. Upstairs an old woman lies in bed, scolding her rat, Humphrey, and speaking into a transistor radio to someone unknown. In the garden a man sings; without speaking, he tells Lily that he is also called Lily.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Black Moon (1975)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Black Moon was shot in Malle's own 200-year-old manor house and its surrounding 225 acre estate in the lush, wild Dordogne valley in Quercy, near Cahors, a property called "Le Coual," or "The Crow's Call."
- Malle hired Sven Nykvist, Ingmar Bergman's cinematographer, to shoot the film, and wanted there to be no scenes in which there was direct sunlight; the crew shot indoor scenes on sunny days until the light was right for the exterior shots.
- Thinking that the film would be difficult for audiences to sit through as a full-length feature, Malle considered releasing it in a shorter version and prepared a one-hour cut, removing scenes that he felt did not work.
