Biography

Henry Bergman was an American actor of stage and screen, remembered largely for his long association with Charlie Chaplin. Born in San Francisco, he spent years in live theater, appearing in Henrietta in 1888. He made his Broadway debut in 1899 in Papa's Wife, opposite Anna Held. His first film work came in 1914 with the L-KO Kompany, when he was forty-six. Two years later he joined Chaplin's circle, starting with The Floorwalker, and he went on to serve as both a character actor and a studio assistant for Chaplin, at times as assistant director. Among the Chaplin pictures he appeared in were The Immigrant (1917), A Dog's Life (1918), The Gold Rush (1925), The Circus (1928) and City Lights (1931). His final screen role was in Modern Times (1936) as a restaurant manager, and he contributed off screen to The Great Dictator in 1940. He stayed with the Chaplin Studios until he died in 1946.
