Plot summary
Down and out, the Derelict sleeps rough outside the Hope Mission until a preacher's sermon draws him inside. The Mission Worker takes his hand and urges him to join the mission; he vows to reform and hands back the collection box he had pocketed. Spotting a help-wanted notice at the police station, he signs up and is assigned Easy Street, a lawless slum where the police keep no order. There the Bully, backed by a criminal gang, is roughing up locals and pilfering their money. The Derelict crosses him and is chased; his blows have no effect, and the Bully bends a streetlamp in two to show his strength.

- The title may have been inspired by the East Street market in London's Walworth district, where Chaplin is believed to have been born, a suggestion made as early as 1928, and the trousers and boots of his tramp costume may have come from everyday clothes he saw worn there.
- In 1932 Amedee Van Beuren of Van Beuren Studios bought Chaplin's Mutual comedies for $10,000 each, added music and sound effects, and re-released them through RKO Radio Pictures; Chaplin had no legal recourse to stop it.
