Plot summary
A bow-legged, uncoordinated recruit among soldiers who march and drill with ease, the Doughboy begins the war in the awkward squad. He reaches the front in France, where he shares a bunk and takes his turn on guard duty. At mail call his comrades receive letters and parcels, but nothing arrives for him; he refuses the food they offer. A package does reach him at last, holding limburger cheese and hard crackers. The smell is so strong that he throws the cheese over the trench into the German lines rather than eat it. That night he cannot sleep in the waist-high water his comrades seem to ignore.
